The other day I was driving to school and listening to morning radio. On Mix 102.9, someone called in and was talking about pregnancy, and the word "period" as in menstruation came up. The two radio personalities started saying: "mmm, nope, beeep, mm-mm, can't say that word on the radio." They were serious, too. Have we really gotten to the point that we can't even talk about normal bodily functions on the radio, even if it is in a serious context? I can imagine that a young girl and her mother are driving to school listening to the radio. The girl hears this and asks, "What is wrong with mentioning a period?" The mom will have to say that the radio station feels that it is not an appropriate subject, and the girl will begin to learn that she should feel embarrassed about her femininity. Women should be proud of their bodies and their cycles. I can understand if the caller on the station was saying something crude, but when she was just talking straightforward about pregnancy, then she should be able to at least mention menstruation. This has gone way too far.
What do you think about the FCC controlling our public airwaves?
Is it better to have the attitude that "it takes a nation to raise a child"; therefore, the government should have some say in what citizens are exposed to?
What is the solution, if a solution is even necessary?
Thoughts? Comments? Disagreements? Reactions?

First off, I also think it's really sad that even public radio is becoming a place where a subject like menstruation is being relegated to the division of shame. What I love most about listening to the radio is hearing alternative views and opinions that go against the mainstream. I like to be challenged by my public radio, not verbally assaulted by it and meant to feel ashamed. I know it's really hard for people today to say words like p-e-n-i-s and v-a-g-i-n-a, but menstruation?!?! I think that if all three of those words became more commonplace in the English language, we would be a much more open and accepting society. As far as the government having a say in what a child is exposed to... I'm not a great fan of the government's over-excessive regulation in our lives. I could understand protecting a child from explicit, dirty talk about sex, but not about something like menstruation or the reproductive system or about maintaining a healthy sexuality. I think most of the time the government does more harm then good. In trying to "protect" children they often withhold critical information from them - mostly about their own bodies and about sexuality. I know this may be a radical solution, but I honestly think people like that shouldn't have radio shows. (I know, I know, freedom of speech). But I can't stand it. We have a show like that here on 102.1 the edge and it's just gross. It's three morning show hosts who basically talk about "titties" and "sex" and "ass" all morning long. It's completely degrading to women and I can't even believe it is on the air still. Anyways, Kristina, your post gave me an idea about something I heard on the radio today so I'm going to make another post about it

You ladies bring up some great points. In general, the thing I think is funny about the "bleeps" is that almost anyone can fill in the blanks! It's like the omission is not really omitted, but even more attention is drawn to it...The whole context in which it is said is still there. I f**king SWEAR we live in a culture of major DENIAL!
