If you're looking for some brash and sassy feminist art, head over to : www.annetaintor.com/Anne puts a modern feminist spin on fifties images. And she's been featured in Oprah's "O Magazine" (so that must mean she's good). But seriously, I think her work is outstanding. So head on over to her website and then come back here and tell us what you think! She takes the term "desperate housewife" to a whole new level.

how many people think that ads are not sexist and they are just art? how many people think that ads try to sell by making women feel insecure about them selves and inducing fear? how many people believe that their confidence was shattered at an early age because of the thousands of ads we see a day being a constant reminder that we are imperfect and that nobody will like us....

I don't really think of advertisements as art simply because they have an alterior motive: to sell stuff. They are not art for art's sake. They are art for Capitalism's sake. And yes, I agree that constantly being bombarded with hundreds of ads a day featuring rail thin models and unattainable images of beauty does take a toll on one's self-confidence. One advertiser that I do have to give kudos to is Kenneth Cole. He consistently brings up issues of social justice within' his ads. He's made comments on AIDS, poverty, Capitalism, and Gay Marriage within' his advertisements. He's definitely someone with a social consciousness. You can see some of his ads at: www.commercialcloset.org/cgi-bin/iowa/themes.html?brand=26

Everyone should definitely check out the rest of their website too. There are so many things concerning the politics of gay culture dispersed throughout mainstream media. Some of it is good and some of it is there to set stereotypes or put people down. We need to be able to separate the two in our everyday lives. Warning you can spend hours on this site!!!! www.commercialcloset.org

i like this thread - thanks for all the links! re: ads and art...sure, i guess ads could be art...
and they have gendered connotations...most of them construct gender in the typical ways that support the status quo...most of which may not be so great for women...AND so does a ton of art that's not produced to sell a product. ads are more likely to do that, though, cuz they have to reinforce consumer patterns...
