OK, I've been needing to get this social feminist train of thought off my chest for a long time now...
From Star Search to American Idol and now America's Got Talent I'm amazed at how maximizing the capitalist profit motive influences the processes of production right before our very eyes. It's ingenious really.
The producers can't lose, only gain. They actually create the market for the performer in the process of doing the show--thereby cutting costs and increasing "productivity." Ironically, the "judges" cut everyone down to size while telling them to be "unique" in their conformity.
And while they emphasize the 'American dream' and working hard, the show is actually a popularity contest that turns the hopefuls into superstars. More Americans call-in to vote for Idol than they do for any political election.
